If we are to ensure full employment, decent wages and security in old age and a lasting peace, far-reaching changes are needed in the way that Britain's affairs are run.
We have now the chance to vote for such changes.
And if we elect a Government that will set the country firmly on the road to peace and prosperity, the effects will be felt not only in Britain, but throughout the world.
The Tories are posing as men of peace, the party to represent Britain at the Summit. What are the realities and results of Tory policy?
Suez, Cyprus and Colonial repression and shocking brutality in Africa. Britain has become America's main bomber and missile base for nuclear war. There are more nuclear weapons here per square mile than in any other country.
The Tories want to give Adenauer money arms.
If the Tories are returned peace will never be assured. They are the champions of the money war and the use of force. They cannot be trusted to represent Britain at the Summit.
The Tories claim that their policy is leading to prosperity and opportunity for all. Prosperity and opportunity - yes - for the rich to make more millions in take-over bids, in soaring rents, and in record profits and dividends while the Tories threaten the trade unions.
Where is the opportunity for the miners, the cotton workers and the aircraft workers? Or prosperity for the old age pensioners, the unemployed and their families?
In fact, Britain's economy has been stagnating and declining under the Tories. Our basic industries face severe crisis. Unemployment is growing again. Britain's economic and technical future demands an end to lorry rule. If people have more to spend, this will help to keep the factories, shops and offices going.
This must be coupled with a policy for industry and trade.
There must be no pit closures, and no sackings elsewhere. Alternative work should be found, without loss of pay.
Overseas trade would be fully encouraged and developed - by ending all bans on East-West trade and granting low-interest loans to-the newly independent peoples in Africa and in the Middle-East. Four hundred thousand new houses and flats a year, for letting at rents the people could afford!
The Tory Rent Act would be repealed, and rent control and security from eviction introduced for council tenants 6o as well. Every encouragement would be given to local authorities to restart building, with 2 per cent housing loans and the restoration of the housing subsidy. For those who want to buy homes, mortgage rates should be low. All health charges should be ended and 75 million a year spent on hospital building, providing a new hospital in every region, and new maternity and mental hospitals.
A start to be made on building health centers in the main cities. We need, too, a great extension of medical research on rheumatism.
The pensioners need more money now - 10 per week at least, for every pensioner, and
an end to the Means Test. Small flats and homes should be built for them at low rents. Let them have cheap fuel and tobacco and special services such as home helps, cheap or free meals and laundry facilities.
